Government expands Staying Home Leaving Violence program

Minister for Family and Community Services and Minister for Women Pru Goward today announced that the Government will fulfil yet another election commitment to expand the Staying Home Leaving Violence program to five more sites across NSW.

“This Government is determined to expand successful services, rather than continuing pilots that may or may not work,” Ms Goward said.

“The expansion will enable the service to reach more than 700 families across NSW each year.

“A further $2.5 million has been investment into this service which protects women and children experiencing domestic violence by enabling them to stay at home, while the perpetrator is removed.

“The aim is to ensure victims and children suffer minimal disruption. It also sends a clear message to perpetrators.”

Minister Goward said the expansion will take place in two stages, with Cessnock, Gosford and Tamworth to commence in 2012, and Parramatta and Holroyd commencing in 2012/13.

“In addition, Blacktown and Quakers Hill will receive an additional $150,000 per year over two years on top of its annual funding to cater for the growing need in that area.”

Minster Goward said the sites were chosen based on an analysis of crime data which showed areas of greatest need for this service in NSW.

“The program offers risk assessments and safety planning (including funds for security upgrades to the home), casework to address financial, tenancy and other personal issues, and referrals to legal advice, counselling and other support projects,” Ms Goward said.

“Women and children are able to continue their normal routines in their local community, while being supported by their family and friends.”

Staying Home Leaving Violence currently operates in 18 locations across NSW where the incidence of domestic violence is high.

Information about Staying Home Leaving Violence, including its current 18 NSW locations, is available at www.domesticviolence.nsw.gov.au.

The site features a short film in which one woman tells her story of escaping violence with help from her local Staying Home Leaving Violence service as well as other useful resources.
