Minister for Family and Community Services Pru Goward today launched a unique photographic exhibition which opens up the world of a special group of young people in NSW - those living in care.
"As Eye See It is an extraordinary exhibition of photographs taken by young people who are in out-of-home care," Ms Goward said.
The images, exhibited at the TAP Gallery in Darlinghurst during Children’s Week, represent things that are important to a young person in care, or represent their time in care.
Each set of images includes an image of the photographer’s right eye, and is accompanied by a written piece about the meaning and importance of the images depicted in the photos.
With the help of caseworkers and carers from non-government agencies as well as the Children’s Guardian and my department, 58 young people living in out-of-home care in NSW produced images for As Eye See It.
Minister Goward said the exhibition provides young people in out-of-home care a creative way to express themselves.
"The photographs have some common themes, including places, pets and people," Ms Goward said.
"One child said his photos depict his ups and downs, challenges and fun. One of his photos is a very long shot of the moon which he said is about finding out more about himself.
"I congratulate the Children’s Guardian on this project and their crucial involvement."
As Eye See It will be open to the public from Tuesday 25 October - Sunday 6 November.
